May French-Sheldon was the first woman to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1892 because of her pioneering work on the previously unexplored Lake Chala. This is an entertaining account of a pioneering safari led by her in 1891 from Mombasa to the Masai lands beyond Mount Kilimanjaro and back. First edition. Her African nickname Bébé Bwana is Swahili and means "Lady Boss". Robinson p. 27: "must be one of the most colourful characters in the history of African exploration".
