[MANCHURIA - PHOTO ALBUM]. - "The Memory Album about the Customs in Manchuria" (Japanese hand-written title on front endpaper). Showa 16 (1931) - Showa 17 (1932).

. Oblong album ( 21 x 15 cm). Twenty-four leaves of strong paper mounted with 35 coloured postcards and 16 b/w photographs. Original padded cloth covered boards, lightly stained and worn. A personal album compiled (July 1931 to October 1932) by a Japanese soldier who belonged to the Kwantung Army which invaded Manchuria (Manchukuo) in September 1931. The occupation lasted until the end of WWII. With descriptive Japanese hand-written annotations throughout the album. The coloured postcards depict rural life, coolies and their work, scenes at markets and shops, auction, housing, life by the river and horse carriages. Many are devoted to native scenes including traditional costumes and a few to beautiful women (models). Most of the postcards have captions in Japanese and Chinese, and a few with English text as well. The photographs depict people and customs including several illustrating the very severe winter that year.
