BARRETT, JIM - The First Bushwalker The Story of Fred Eden

Jim Barrett, Glenbrook, NSW, Australia, 1996. Octavo; paperback; 90pp., with many maps and monochrome illustrations. New. Fred Eden was a British citizen who arrived in Australia in 1889. For twenty-five years he walked widely around the country particularly the Eastern coastal regions, South Australia and Tasmania, before settling in the Blue Mountains in the early 1900s. During his walks he kept extensive journals of his experiences, only a few of which have, unfortunately, survived. Jim Barrett edits his way through this material to highlight the adventures of this pioneering bushwalker. Fred Eden left Australia to administer his mother's estates in Switzerland and died in 1948, and wasn't able to get back to this country; nevertheless he left a fascinating legacy in his footsteps.
