DIDEROT, DENIS; D'ALEMBERT, JEAN LE ROND (EDS.) - Encyclopedie, Ou Dictionnaire Raisonnè Des Sciences, Des Arts Et Des Metiers / Complete Set in Five Volumes

New York and Paris, Pergamon Press, 1969. Hardcover. Each volume measures 40 x 27 x 5.5 cms. Our offering is the five volume condensed (not abridged) edition, bound in red buckram with gilt lettering and embellishments. The full text and images are reduced to four double-spread pages of the original appearing on one folio-sized page of this printing, similar to the condensed edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. Each volume contains between 1,150 and 1,500 pages, with illustrations. The boards of each volume show very slight shelf wear. The binding is strong, and the contents are pristine. A near fine set. The Encyclopedie was a general encyclopedia published in Paris between 1751 and 1772, with later supplements, revised editions and translations. It had many writers, known as the 'Encyclopedistes'. It was edited by Denis Diderot and, until 1759, co-edited by Jean le Rond d'Alembert. It was, and remains, a massive undertaking, normally found in 35 volumes.
