PFIZER, GUSTAV, - Der Nibelungen Noth

0. 1843. Illustrirt mit Holzschnitten nach Zeichnungen von Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld und Eugen Neureuther. Die Bearbeitung des Textes von Dr. Gustav Pfizer. Stuttgart & Tuebingen, Cotta, 1843; "4to" [c. 29 x 21.5 cm].; [viii], 430, [ii] pp.; contemporary half finely-ribbed diamond-patterned cloth over plain boards; edges and extremities worn, with slight, inconspicuous loss on hinges, two or three small stains to front board, spotting to pp. [i] - [viii], and very occasional odd further spots (a few on top edge),, marginal embrowning to contents, with a slight indentation in extreme edge of top margins of ca. 40 pp.some pages unopened. First edition of one of the major works of German Romantic book illustration, the text printed throughout within a scrolled rule border, with decorative initials, marginal illustrations, and ornaments incorporated in the text as well as half-page and full-page illustrations. Schnorr took over six of his own designs for his Nibelungen frescoes in the new Muenchener Residenz for this work (hence the printed dedication to King Ludwig of Bavaria) and added new designs and decorations: all are strongly in the tradition established by Peter von Cornelius in a series of etchings published in 1817. This work is widely celebrated, and features in major exhibitions on German illustration of the period, including "Die Kunst der Illustration", Wolfenbuettel, 1986-7, No. 24 (p.59 of the catalogue).
