That force was disbanded in July 1941 and elements including Jim Almonds formed the core of David Stirling's 'L Detachment' which became the SAS. Captured and shipped to Italy he escaped and reached Allied forces in October 1943. Subsequently he parachuted into occupied France as part of an SAS sabotage team he was taken to see General Montgomery by Paddy Mayne who insisted that he should receive a battlefield commission, which he did, fine,
