BUSCH, WILHELM, - Max and Moritz.

. A Story in Seven Tricks. Munich: Braun & Schneider, London: A.N.Myers && Co. n.d. [c. 1870]; [iv], 53pp. printed on one side of every leaf, with two or three hand-coloured vignettes after the author on nearly every page, publisher's list printed on the endpapers; publisher's olive-green cloth, decorated and illustrated in black and gilt;THE INITIAL CONDITION WAS: splits to hinges with slight losses at head and tail of spine, rear board partly faded, inner joints split, stitching defective to first gathering, hence front endpaper and first four pages detached, page 8 detached and chipped at edges, THEN RE-BACKED AND THE OLD SPINE LAID DOWN. slight embrowning, owner's name - Dorothy E. Hart in top margin of title-page, lacking rear free endpaper. Rare edition in English of one of Germany's most famous and most successful children's books. Wilhelm Busch owed his immense and lasting success to his humour and illustrations. Apparently the first translation into English was by C.T.Brooks, and was published in Boston in 1871; the British Library's copy of the anonymous translation we are offering, published with Busch's original illustrations and colouring by his original publisher, is dated 1874, but our copy is undated. We think it is of the 1870s, or just possibly early 1880s. No edition in Osborne.
