MOORE, A. W. (EDITOR) ASSISTED BY JOHN RHYS - The Book of Common Prayer in Manx Gaelic. Being translations made by Bishop Phillips in 1610, and by the Manx clergy in 1765 - Volumes I & II

I)/No Dust Jacket. publication numbers XXXII & XXXIII of The Manx Society for Publication of National Documents; pre-title page of Manx Society giving date established (1858), logo, volume number, & date of publication, followed by list of officers of the society. The 1604 Book of Common Prayer was first translated into Manx by Bishop Phillips in 1610, but was never printed, and seems to have been forgotten by the 1750's, when Bishop Hildesley began his project of publishing translations into Manx of the Bible and other religious books. The 1662 Prayer Book was translated by members of the Manx clergy around 1760, and published in 1765.. A reprint of 1842 forms the basis of this edition produced by A. W. Moore with the assistance of Sir John Rhys, Professor of Celtic In the University of Oxford, and published by the Manx Society in two volumes in 1893. In this edition both the 1610 and 1765 translations are given in parallel text. Volume I contents include preface by John Rhys; Biographical memoir of Bishop Phillips (pages ix-xxii); Description of the M. S. (pages xxiii-xxiv); Texts & Rubrics to the end of the Commination Service (pages 1-446). Volume II continues with the Psalms(page 467-667 including 4 pages of appendices) & also ends with Professor Sir John Rhys's 183- page "Outlines of the Phonology of Manx Gaelic" based on visits to the Island between 1886 & 1893 when he recorded in a phonetic alphabet of his own the pronunciation of Manx speakers in all parts of the Island, from conversation & from their reading aloud. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 466 & 203 + 183 pages. 2-volume set (complete). Bindings are tight, covers and spines fully intact. Foxing to front & rear pages, but body of books mostly clean and unfoxed. Previous owner's name ink-stamped on pre-title pages. Gilt titles spines with gilt Manx coat of arms within blind-stamped decorative borders front & rear covers. Vol. I has repaired damage to spine (re-glued) & wear to spine ends & bottom outer corner; both volumes now in archive acetate film protection. green cloth. Quantity Available: 1.
