Tall 8vo. Size: 17 x 27.7 cm. 49 double-folded leaves, in the oriental fashion, resewn. Comprising Chinese title and preface, French title and content followed by 23 double page lithographed illustrations with poems in Chinese accompanied with descriptions in English and French. Original purple silk wrappers decorated in gilt. Gengzhi tu (Pictures of Tilling and Weaving) was originally compiled by Lou Shou in the twelfth century comprising illustrations of rice cultivation and silk manufacturing. It became very popular during the Qing period and a famous version of Gengzhi tu was sponsored by the emperor Kangxi in 1696. Agriculture and silk production held a special place in China and both occupations were regarded as paramount for the well-being of the state. The part about silk manufacturing is here reproduced with lithographed wood cut illustrations. The charming images show the sericulture beginning with washing the eggs, followed by feeding, gathering leaves, selecting cocoons, soaking and unravelling, spinning the woof thread, preparing the warp, weaving, dyeing, making garments, etc.
