Brugsch (1827-1894) was a German Egyptologist who pioneered the decipherment of Demotic text, the simplified script of the ancient Egyptian language. He was sent to Egypt by the Prussian government in 1853 where he associated with Auguste Mariette in his excavations at Memphis. In 1870 he became the director of the School of Egyptology in Cairo.
