Bigandet (1813-94), a French Catholic missionary, came to Burma in 1837 and stayed there for most of his life. He established a number of schools, orphanages and convents in Burma and became vice-president of the Rangoon Educational Syndicate, an unsual position for a Catholic Bishop under a British colonial government.
