BRINKLEY, FRANK: - Gogaku hitori annai (English self taught). Three volumes. Tokyo, Nisshűa-sha, 1875.

Pp. vi, 352; (iv), 271; (iv), 349, (1) blank, index xxix. With parallel text in English and Japanese. Original printed wrappers, spines and extremities somewhat chipped. First edition of this early guide for Japanese to learn English by themselves. Comprising two parts: 1. Vocabularies listing the character, the English equivalent, the pronunciation and the Katana character; and 2. Sentences in Japanese with the English translation. Captain Frank Brinkley (1841-1912) came to Japan in 1867 as commander of a unit of the Royal Artillery stationed in Yokohama. Later he took up the post of foreign advisor to the new Meji government. He also became proprietor and editor of the English-language newspaper the "Japan Mail" (later merged with the Japan Times). Brinkley wrote several books related to Japanese studies, its history and language. This work seems very rare, no western library copies are found. Two editions of "Shin gogaku hitori annai"╩(New guide to English self taught) appeared in 1909 and 1911 respectively, probably later prints of this work (listed by Worldcat). Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (Tokyo 1965) 2650. Not in Cordier.
