16mo. Pp. 77; (iv), 62. Some leaves in second volume misbound but text is complete. With 54 coloured aquatint plates, of which 28 double page and 4 folding. Contemporary red papercovered boards ruled in gilt, red calf spines lettered and decorated in gilt. Partly with some foxing to the text but the plates are clean and bright. First edition of a very charming and attractive work on China with the most wonderful illustrations engraved after William Alexander, a British artist. Some of the plates depict portraits of emperors, mandarins, ladies and soldiers from different regions. Other illustrations depict palaces, temples, fortress, the Great Wall, military posts, barges, pheasants, arms, audiences, etc. etc. William Alexander (1767-1816) travelled to China as draughtsman with Lord Macartney's embassy to the emperor 1792-94.
