Tall 8vo. Pp. xxii, 240. Includes the Chinese title printed on yellow paper. With 2 folding lithographed plates. Half morocco on marbled boards, spine with five raised bands and title lettered in gilt. Bookplate. Second edition (first 1822) enlarged with a table "des principales phonétiques chinoises" devised by Leon de Rosny. Abel Rémusat's grammar was the first usable Chinese grammar printed in Europe. Unlike previous grammars he did not try to impose any of the common categories of Indo-European languages on the Chinese languages he described. Abel-Rémusat distinguishes carefully between classical or literary Chinese and the vernacular. The two languages are treated in two different sections; "Style antique" respectively "Style moderne". However the last section with analyses of the vernacular is more elaborated and valuable than the classical part. Alain Peyraube: "Some reflections on the sources of the Mashi Wentong" pp. 345-46. Cordier BS 1662.
