[BURMA]. - The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, in Sgau Karen. Translated by Francis Mason. Tavoy, Karen Mission Press, American Baptist Missionary Union, C. Bennett, 1853.

Large 8vo. Pp. (iv), 8 + lvs 392 of Old testament + lvs 128 of New Testament including title page dated 1853. Titles in English otherwise text in Sgau Karen throughout. Contemporary full calf, flat spine lettered and ruled in gilt, worn, hinges cracking. Bookplate (Rochester Theological Seminary) and with its stamp on title. Dampstain at bottom of first 25 lvs and last 20 lvs. The first complete edition of the Bible in Sgau Karen, and the third of the New Testament (first 1843). American missionaries arrived in Burma 1828 to serve among the Karen tribes. A printing press was installed at Maulmain and several years later the mission set up a press at Tavoy (Lower Burma).
