- Betting Book of the 2nd Battalion (78th) Seaforth Highlanders (1822 - 1908) Private Printed for the Officers' Mess

The St Catherine Press Ltd. London. 1909, Special Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 157 pages (complete). A wonderfully entertaining and diverting book of the bets placed by officers of the 2nd Battalion of the (78th) Seaforths. If one ever wondered if boys ever grown up or what soldiers do when bored or drunk at the mess table should invest in this book. The 27th April 1833 at Stirling Castle was a noticeably raucous evening. A considerable number of bets were placed (with Captain Armstrong a common factor) about the width or narrowness of various parts of another's body. The 'Lost by' column records that Capt Armstrong was a consistent loser. 30th Jan 1840 records at Burnley: "Mr Lambert bets Mr Horrocks he guesses as near the number of pegs in the room as Mr Horrocks does." (Horrocks loses). More dramatically at Poona on 27th Dec 1856: "Capt. Hunt bets Capt. Bogle one bottle of champagne that neither he nor Capt Bogle will be killed in action this time twelvemonth." The Lost by column records (Capt. Hunt & Capt. Bogle both killed). Obviously a much read and enjoyed book. The cover is dignified and sure. There is wear to all edges, seams, corners. The faces are scuffed and worn but still direct and confident. The spine and binding are strong. Inside, the contents have some foxing throughout. The frontispage has previous owner annotations. From there are despite the foxing freckles the pages are comfortable, relaxed, certain, affable, clear, firm against the spine and contented. A MUST have book! fk. Fair/No Jacket.
