LARRY W. BURT - Tribalism in Crisis - Federal Indian Policy, 1953-1961

Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1982. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 16x23.5cm. "This study of federal Indian policy during the Eisenhower era is the first complete account of a particularly significant period in recent Native American history. It describes the efforts of a bloc of conservative western congressmen known as terminationists to reverse the policies that had guided the Bureau of Indian Affairs under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Indian New Deal had supported tribal sovereignty and attempted to help Native Americans adjust to change at their own pace and within their own cultures. The terminationists advocated the withdrawal of federal services and supervision from Native Americans, calling for a return to the policy of assimilating Indian people into the dominant culture that had characterized federal policy in the early years of the twentieth century." Brick red cloth, gilt title on spine, spotting to edges of page block and crease to base of spine the only external flaws; content clean, crisp and uncreased, almost like new, binding tight. Light rub marks to intact jacket bearing minor imperfections/scuffing at corners, plus split at top rear fore edge corner at the crease.. Very Good to Near Fine .
