[JOHANN JAKOB BRUCKER] [WILLIAM ENFIELD] - Institutiones Historiae Philosophicae / The History of Philosophy

NP, NP ND (1771), hb. Bound in period brown leather with no adornments or lettering. 12mo, pp. 128. ¶ Brucker's history of philosophy was published in Latin from 1742, and was considered one of the most important, and authoritative, editions until the 19th century. Enfield's history drew upon Brucker's, but was not a literal translation. It was first published in London, in two volumes, in 1791. Our volume is printed in Latin and what appears to be Icelandic, but the type face is in what is sometimes inelegantly described as "Gothic", and thus is hard to decipher. There is no title page, or table of contents. The text appears to begin with Socrates and to be incomplete, ending at the beginning of chapter IX. Boards are bowed, with a bit of wear to edges. Early signature to front endpaper. Typical age-toning to paper. Still tightly-bound. A good copy.
