[PHOTOALBUM - JAPAN]. TAMAMURA, KOZABURO & KIMBEI, KUSAKABE, ETC.: - [A Japanese lacquer album with 50 hand coloured photographs. Ca 1880's].

A charming small Japanese album (18 x 13,5 cm) with 50 hand coloured albumen photos (13,5 x 9 cm), protected with tissue guards, pasted on thick cardboard. The leaves are double folded. Original lacquered boards with gilt decorations on both covers. The album comprises photos with 25 scenic views from different parts of Japan; Yokohama, Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura, Tokyo, etc. Many of the photos have printed captions. The verso contains 25 photographs of people, mainly of women in different costumes and situations, of which many are portraits taken in a studio, others depict scenes from everyday life. None of these photos have any captions. Some with foxing to the card board but all the photos are in good condition. A most appealing album. This type of souvenir albums begun to appear in the second half of the 19th century in Japan. At first most of the studios were based in Yokohama but after the 1880's several studios opened in Tokyo, Kobe and Nagasaki. See Terry Bennett, Old Japanese Photographs, London, Quaritch 2006.
