KING (William): - An Essay on the Origin of Evil. Translated from the Latin, with Notes. To which is added, A Sermon by the same Author, on the Fall of Man. The Fifth Edition, Revised. By Edmund, Lord Bishop of Carlisle.

London: Printed for R. Faulder...and T. and J. Merril, Cambridge. 1781. 8vo, 216 x 131 mms., pp. [iii], viii - lxii, 312, *305 - *312, 313 - 456 [457 - 472 Index], contemporary lightly speckled calf, black leather label; front joint slightly cracked, other slight wear to binding, but a good copy. King's De origine mali was first published in 1702, and Edmund Law's translation in 1731 was the first (and only) to appear in English. The work caused a good deal of intellectual and philosophical interest both in Britain and on the continent when it was first published, and its influence continued throughout the 18th century. At one time, Pope's An Essay on Man was thought to have derived some of its ideas from King's work. This fifth edition was the last to be published in the 18th century.
