Like who knows how many women writers of the 19th century, Celeste took to novels and plays, starting with this, to climb out of a poverty pit dug by a malevolent or feckless husband. In her case, her blacksheep noble husband - the comte de Chabrillan - was feckless, careless enough to die in Melbourne in 1858.
