First English edition which preceded the first German edition (Vienna 1856). Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) was the very first woman full-time traveller. She was born in Vienna in 1797 and at the age of 45, after raising two children and with a husband living away from home, she began to travel. The rest of her life she spent either travelling or preparing to travel. Her travels became increasingly adventurous as she ventured further and further off the beaten tourist track. Her books became very popular and translated all around the world. Robinson p. 25.
