ORMROD, RICHARD - Una Troubridge - the Friend of Radclyffe Hall

London, Jonathan Cape. 1984, First Edition. (ISBN: 0224021796). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xviii + 340 pages. 30 illustrations. When Una Troubridge (1887-1963) died at the age of 76 part of the inscription she had instructed her executors to put on her coffin read: Una Vincenzo Troubridge, The Friend of Radclyffe Hall. It is clear that Una considered that the most significant thing she had done in her life was to dedicate herself body and soul from the age of 28 to 'John' Radclyffe Hall, as lover, companion, comrade in arms, secretary and, latterly, nurse. For this she effectively relinquished husband, child, mother, friends and social approval. It is a love story as compelling as the Brownings and, strangely, little has been written about either of the central characters. What we know about the author of The Well of Loneliness has come from Una, while Una has until now remained an enigma. Yet she was a gifted singer, the only sculptor for whom Nihinsky ever sat and Colette's first English translator. Born Margot Elena Gertrude Taylor, she was nicknamed Una by her family as a child and chose the middle name Vincenzo herself, after her Florentine relatives. She married Captain Ernest Troubridge in October 1908; they had one daughter, Andrea. Ernest Troubridge rose to the rank of admiral during and immediately after the First World War, and Una gained her title when Admiral Troubridge was knighted in June 1919, although they were already legally separated at the time. D4E. Fine/Fine.
