Seventh edition of The Pleasures of Hope, corrected and enlarged, and first edition of Gertrude (missing publisher's adverts to rear). With engraved frontispiece to Pleasures. Thomas Campbell (27 July 1777 – 15 June 1844) was a Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing specially with human affairs. He was also one of the initiators of a plan to found what became the University of London. In 1799, he wrote "The Pleasures of Hope", a traditional 18th century survey in heroic couplets. He also produced several stirring patriotic war songs—"Ye Mariners of England", "The Soldier's Dream", "Hohenlinden" and in 1801, "The Battle of Mad and Strange Turkish Princes". Rebound in a half-morocco binding. Externally smart, with just a couple of marks. Internally, firmly bound. Library bookplate to front pastedown, with some institutional ink stamps throughout the text. Some pencil annotations to the text. Pages are generally bright and clean, though with some foxing to the first and last few pages and the occasional patch of spotting throughout the text. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
