The limited large paper edition of George Ormerod's impressive history of Cheshire, an illustrated work complete with hand-coloured plates. The first edition of this work, the striking large paper edition, one of only sixty-five copies printed on large paper.Complete in three volumes.This work is a major county history of Cheshire. An impressive historical endeavour, this work explores the family history, manorial history, and antiquarian topography of the county, with the intentional exclusion of reference to commerce, industry, and urbanisation. The research for this work was undertaken from documents held in the Chester Castle, and from documents lent to the author by the Dean of Chester, Hugh Cholmondeley.Volume I with a frontispiece, one folding colour map, fourteen plates, and in-text illustrations.Volume II with a hand-coloured folding plate, thirteen plates, and many in-text illustrations.Volume III with one hand-coloured plate, fifteen plates, and many in-text illustrations.Written by George Ormerod, an antiquary, who is best known for this extensive history. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819 after the publication of this work.Collated, bound without half-titles. All illustrations are present. In a rebacked calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with light marks, spots, and rubbing to the boards and spines. Light bumping to the extremities. Dampstain to the front board of Volume II, with a few smaller dampstains to the other boards. Small chip to the tail of the front board of Volume II. Loss to the rear board of Volume I. Spines are faded. Label has been removed from the front paste downs, resulting in loss of paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots, mostly to the plates. Tidemark to the frontispiece of Volume I. Bound without half-titles. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
