BARAKA, Amiri (LeRoi JONES) - Autograph Manuscript: Craft & Black Writer 1970s. Manuscript. A handwritten ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT by Baraka consisting of two 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of Paschal's Motor Hotel letterhead, written on rectos only, consisting of advice for African-American writers. Some of his observations: "Difficult for any writer to get below surface to go beyond ready mades + cliches (of form and content) But Blacks more difficult because we are denied a tradition We are forced to learn from others before we even learn from ourselves (schools, media, racism + white supremacy)." Baraka lists various authors and titles that a writer should read and states, "Be in touch w/ the state of the art .. know world literature," after which he lists a number of authors including "The great Irish Writers .. The great Russians .. The great Latin Am. writers." He concludes, "Tell the truth/put yr whole feeling in it/make sense to you + the world/Don't become a 'Ho." The letterhead used is interesting in that Paschal's was where many of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement gathered to discuss their strategy and issues in the 1960s, and its restaurant was one of the first to seat black and white patrons together. Right margins a little ragged. Very Good . USD 3125.00 [Appr.: EURO 2683.25 | £UK 2323.25 | JP¥ 460643] Book number 022170is offered by:
