A rare issue of this scarce left-wing journal, with articles, poems, stories and literary criticism by Ilya Ehrenburg, George Barker, and Douglas Garman, among others. A very scarce issue of this scarce work in the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Volume Three, No. 4 (May 1937) of Left Review, a journal set up by the British section of the International Union of Revolutionary Writers. This journal was established in 1934 and continued until 1938. MI5 recorded the names of all contributors to the magazine and kept detailed files on several of Left Review's contributors as possible "security risks", including Cecil Day-Lewis, Wintringham and Rex Warner.This issue includes an article on the Spanish Civil War by the notable Soviet writer and revolutionary Ilya Ehrenburg (1891-1967); an essay on Ibsen by Douglas Garman (1903-1969); poems by George Barker (1913-1991) and John Pudney (1909-1977); and a book review by Thomas Alfred Jackson (1879-1955), who was a founding member of the Socialist Party of Great Britain and later the Communist Party of Great Britain. In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. 2.5" tear to the head of the spine, caused by rusting staple. Marks to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound.
