Two attractive volumes of this early eighteenth-century French translation of the 'Lives of the Desert Fathers', with engravings. Containing volume one and volume four from the very scarce four-volume set. Incorrectly bound as Volume 1 and 2 to the spines. Uniformly bound in a pleasing quarter crushed morocco, with marbled boards. Blanks have been renewed to both volumes. Illustrated profusely throughout both volumes. Across the four volume-set, there should be four engraved frontispieces and two hundred and ninety engraved plates (six folding). Across these two volumes, we have two engraved frontispieces, one hundred and forty engraved plates and six folding plates.  The Historia monachorum in Aegypto, or Lives of the Desert Fathers, demonstrated here in French, was one of the most popular hagiographical texts throughout the Middle Ages. The combination travelogue and hagiography from the late 4th century AD (written anonymously) recounts the travels of a band of seven Palestinian monks on a pilgrimage through Egypt, and was originally written in Greek.The work offers a study of those who retreated to the desert to live a life of holiness, some of them in challenging conditions like Simeon the Stylite. Uniformly bound in quarter crushed morocco with marbled boards. Blanks have been renewed to both volumes. Externally, very smart, with rubbing to the extremities and slight discolouration to the spines. Internally, firmly bound.
