A limited edition of the classic French tale of the Chevalier des Grieux and his lover Manon Lescaut, following them from France, leading a life of luxury in Paris, to a tragic end in Louisiana. A limited edition, numbered number one of thirty-three editions on Japanese Paper. In the original French. "Manon Lescaut" was originally published in 1731, controversial upon its publication, and subsequently banned in France. Despite it being banned, or perhaps because it was banned, the novel became incredibly popular and widely-read. The novel has been widely referenced in later literature and art, in such books as "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexandre Dumas fils, "The Picture of Dorian Grey" by Oscar Wilde, and "The Red and the Black" by Stendhal. With thirty-three in text watercolours by Jean Driot, with an additional loose plate of one of the illustrations. Jean Driot was a French painter born into a bourgeois family, who had his first watercolour exhibition in 1911 at the Galerie du Roy in Brussels. He published his illustrations in many magazines and books, and also created a lot of popular posters, continuing to exhibit all the while. In this limited edition publication, there were a total of three-thousand and thirty-three copies. Thirty-three were on Japanese Paper, one-hundred and fifty on vellum with illustrations on Japanese Paper, and two-thousand and eighty-five on vellum with cloth and paper from Lana. Collated, complete. In the original publisher"s paperback binding printed on Japanese paper, with a glassine protective cover. Externally, very smart. Glassine wrap has protected the boards and spine. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd light handling mark throughout. Some pages remain uncut at the foredge.
