Initially priced at 2d, it was the first cheap magazine for middleclass women, an immediate success. Co-edited by Samuel Beeton and his wife Isabella, this magazine started its publication in 1856. This copy was dated from its preface, dated 1858. From 1860 the price increased and the magazine became directed to a wealthier readership, featuring coloured plates and more emphasis on fiction and fashion.Featuring articles of domestic management, embroidery patterns, cooking, dress-making, and translations of French novels by Isabella Beeton, as well as a range of serial fiction, biographical sketches, notes on gardening and medicine, &c. Illustrated with a frontispiece and additional illustrated title page, as well as numerous further illustrations in text. Short advertising paragraph to last leaf of text. Rebound in half calf over marbled boards. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound.
