Bennett and hand-coloured by the binder Eric Sweet, who beautifully bound this work in quarter morocco with a watercolour cover and a cloth clamshell casing. The first American edition of Bennett's illustrated edition of the Fables of Aesop. First published in the UK in 1857. Bound by Eric Sweet, a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking, reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style.Illustrated by Charles H. Bennett, a noted Victorian illustrator, with a frontispiece and twenty-three plates. Collated, complete. The plates are hand-coloured by Eric Sweet to replicate Bennett's scarce hand-coloured edition. A charming collection of fables credited to Aesop, a Greek storyteller and fabulist whose tales were characterised by the anthropomorphic animal characters. Beautifully bound in crushed quarter morocco with watercolour paper boards, endpapers renewed, blanks and half title retained, with a cloth clamshell box. Eric Sweet's binder's label can be found inside the clamshell. The volume also includes two draft copies of the watercolour paintings he produced for the cover.A binder's note from Sweet can be found to the front of the work, discussing the watercolour covers and his hand-colouring of the plates. Bound in crushed quarter morocco with paper to the boards, endpapers renewed, blanks and half title retained, with a cloth clamshell box. Externally lovely.
