London, E Grant Richards, 1906-11. Paperback. Seventeen parts of this ornithological work. The publication was originally issued in twenty monthly parts, which eventually formed five volumes. This set comprises of seventeen of the original parts of this volume, very scarce to be found in this form. First edition of seventeen of the original twenty parts. This set contains parts I-XII and then parts XIV-XVIII inclusive. Lacking part XIII and parts XIX and XX. Errata slip to the start of part IV. To the rear of part IV is the tile page and contents for 'Volume I' which comprises of parts I-IV. Two colour folding maps to the rear of part IV. To the rear of part VIII is the title page and contents for 'Volume II' which comprises of parts V-VIII inclusive. To the rear of part XII is a 'list of provisional subscribers' in addition to the title pages and contents for volume III. To the rear of part XVI is the title page and contents for volume IV. Plates I-CXCVII to first twelve parts. Plates CCXV-CCCII to parts XIV-XVIII. Collated, the parts present are complete. This work was written by Charles Stoneham with illustrations by L M Medland. Lillian M Medland was a popular British ornithological artist. She mostly depicted birds of Australia, but this work has been hailed as one of her best. In original paper wraps. Externally, worn. Heavy chipping to the extremities of all wraps and volumes. Front wrap is detached and not present to volume I, severe loss to the spine. Loss to the head and tail of backstrip to volume II. Loss to the head and tail of backstrip to all volumes, worse to volume X, VII, XV and XIV. Tear to front joint of parts VII and IX, resulting in the cover starting but firm. Large closed tear to the rear wrap of part V. Small tidemark to the bottom outer corner of plates to part V. Outer wrap to part X has detached from textblock. Front and rear wraps to part XVIII are detached but present. Spots to wraps which are age toned at spine and edges. Internally, all volumes have slightly strained bindings. The plates are bright with age toned pages. Pages are heavily spotted with small amounts of foxing throughout. Plates have the odd spot and in some instances very light tidemarks. Good Only .
