London, John Collins, Seedman, R Burleigh, 1717. First edition. Leather. A fascinating eighteenth century work on the managing of fruit-trees. The first edition of this particular work. It is very possible that the writing Collins is contrasting is Rev John Lawrence's The Clergy-Man's Recreation: Shewing the pleasure and profit of the Art of gardening from 1714. To the preface Collins notes that this publication was inspired by his reading of Lawrence's book and his disagreement with it. This work discusses border plants against walls, the choices of wall-trees, seasons for wall-fruit-trees, the planting, the seasonal pruning and more. Specific fruit trees include cherries, plums, pears, quinces and figs. There are also writings on pest-control such as preventing earwigs from damaging fruits. The growing of fruit trees in Britain dates back to ancient times due to their food producing qualities. For centuries fruit plants were regarded as ornamental and essential. This work provides a fascinating insight into what would become the popular walled gardens of the 18th century. A very scarce and important work, we know of only one sold in the last ten years.
