Written by Doris May Lessing, a British novelist who was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. In awarding the prize, the Academy described her as "that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny". Lessing was the oldest person ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, at age 87. This set contains: The Four-Gated City, 1969. The concluding novel in Lessing's semi-autobiographical series The Children of Violence. Moving to London, Martha "is integrally part of the social history of the time - the Cold War, the Aldermaston Marches, Swinging London, the deepening of poverty and social anarchy." The novel extends into science fiction, depicting a dystopian future following the destruction of Britain. Briefing for a Descent into Hell, 1971. A psychological novel. A well-dressed but disheveled man is found wandering alone at night on London's Embankment. Unable to remember anything, he is escorted to a psychiatric hospital where he is identified as Charles Watkins, a professor of Classics at the University of Cambridge. The Fifth Child, 1988. A short novel, describing the changes in the happy life of a married couple, Harriet and David Lovatt, as a consequence of the birth of Ben, their fifth child. In the original full cloth binding.
