Mrs Hofland - Alfred Campbell or the Travels of a Young Pilgrim in Egypt and the Holy Land; Alfred Campbell&Apos;S Return to the East.

 1568832228,
London, John Harris, 1826. Leather. Two volumes giving the fictional travels of a young pilgrim, bound as one. Barbara Hofland was a prolific author of books for children. She was orphaned young, and supported herself and her husband through much of their lives by her writing. She also opened a ladies' finishing school, a forerunner to the modern Harrogate College. Hofland intended the stories to be in a form "acceptable to youth". They are in a sense didactic, being conceived as morally instructional works for young people. They were based on genuine memoirs of such journeys, particularly those of one Rae Wilson and Captain Mangles RN. Illustrated with 24 charming engravings, showing episodes from the stories. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound with a little rubbing to the extremities and spine. There is a mark to the bottom of the spine. With a bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lighted spotted throughout, and with the occasional stain. Offsetting to around half of the 24 plates. Very Good . Ill.: Unamed. Very Good .
