The pioneering Scottish optical engineering firm, formed in 1913 in Glasgow, played a leading role in the development of modern optics, including rangefinders for the Royal Navy and for other branches of British Armed Forces during the 20th century. The guide first appeared in English as "The Principles of Rangefinding together with descriptive notes on the Barr & Stroud Rangefinders and their Principal features.
