Paris, Ernest Leroux, 1895-1905, first French edition, 5 parts in 6 vols., contemporary uniform halfgoatskin extra (stained black) with raised bands and giltlettering on spine. = Very rare complete set of the first edition of the works' first ever translation into a western language, "a landmark" and "the standard by which all subsequent renditions (...) must be measured" (W. Nienhauser in Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English). Sima's Shiji [Records of the Grand Historian] is respected as a model of biographical literature with high literary value and still stands as a textbook for the study of classical Chinese. Sima's works were influential to Chinese writing, serving as ideal models for various types of prose within the neo-classical ("renaissance" ??) movement of the Tang-Song period. The great use of characterisation and plotting also influenced fiction writing, including the classical short stories of the middle and late medieval period (Tang-Ming) as well as the vernacular novel of the late imperial period. Sima had immense influence on historiography not only in China, but also in Japan and Korea. For centuries afterwards, the Shiji was regarded as the greatest history book written in Asia. Sima is little known in the English-speaking world as a full translation of the Shiji has never been attempted. Coverboards and first and final leaves some worming. Otherwise a neat set.

Books are in good antiquarian condition, unless described otherwise. Serious defects are stated, minor defects not always. All prices are in Euro, tax included, but without postage, packing and bank charges which are at buyer's expense. Shipping of books after receipt of payment. Books may be returned within 14 working days (prior notification welcome). A full refund can be expected if the books do not match the description stated. Otherwise, only the price of the books (excluding shipping costs) will be refunded.
Orders from the Netherlands and other Euro-countries preferably paid by bank transfer.
We also accept VISA, Mastercard/Eurocard, American Express and Paypal at cost.

Onze boeken verkeren in goede antiquarische staat, tenzij anders beschreven. Kleine onvolkomenheden zijn niet altijd vermeld. Prijzen zijn in Euro, inclusief BTW (niet apart vermeld, omdat we deelnemen aan de margeregeling voor antiquaren) en exclusief portokosten.
Een bestelling per e-mail wordt altijd met een e-mail beantwoord. Bestellingen worden doorgaans verstuurd na betaling vooraf.
We behouden ons het recht voor de goederen te verzekeren en/of aangetekend te verzenden. De kosten daarvan worden veelal doorberekend aan de koper.
Boeken blijven eigendom van de verkoper tot de volle prijs is betaald. Retourzendingen binnen 14 dagen na ontvangst (waarbij voorafgaande kennisgeving op prijs wordt gesteld). In dat geval volgt restitutie van de prijs van het boek (exclusief portokosten). Alleen als de beschrijving foutief was, worden ook de portokosten gerestitueerd. Retourzendingen dienen de verkoper te bereiken in dezelfde staat als waarin ze aan de koper werden verzonden. Het risico van retourzendingen is voor de afzender!
