- 1939 New York Realists : December 17-30

New York, NY, A.C.A. Gallery, 1939. Softcover. White wraps with bw illustration, black text. 6 pp. 4 bw illustrations. "A new realism emerges in the work of these 1939 New York realists. With experience, they find reality assuming a broader meaning than social content in the sense current a few years ago. The habit of social artists of using gloomy symbols exclusively has been corrected by salutarily hopeful moods. The goals to which these young artists look forward are sharply defined. Their endeavor, whether in painting or in sculpture, is purposive: they plan usefulness in terms of communication. They aim to reach the point where plastic terms are popular terms. This movement toward humanity tends toward a humanist art, richer and warmer than previous simplifications. Nevertheless the progressive artist does not believe that humanism in art need reject the twentieth century's plastic revolution. Fusing social content and documentary realism and employing abstract design as a tool, he seeks to synthesize life and art. Good, some minor wear on wraps, pages excellent .
