Complete in three volumes. A facsimile set of the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, initially published serially in sections from 1768 to 1771. The Encyclopædia Britannica is a general-knowledge English-language encyclopaedia which was printed for two hundred and forty-four years before moving to an online database, making it the longest-running in-print encyclopaedia in the English language. Throughout history, the publication has had two aims: to be an excellent reference book, and to provide educational material. With the subtitle: A Dictionary of Art and Sciences, Compiled Upon a New Plan in Which the Different Sciences and Arts are Digested into Distinct Treaties or Systems; and the Various Technical Terms, &C. are Explained as they Occur in the Order of the Alphabet. Volume one covers A to B and is illustrated with fifty-eight plates. Volume two covers C to L and is illustrated with forty-six plates. Volume three covers M to Z and is illustrated with fifty-six plates. Collated complete. In the original faux leather binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting throughout.
