The first two volumes only of the very scarce three volume first edition of Robert Dodsley's periodical, edited by poet and physician Mark Akenside. Dodsley, an English poet, writer and bookseller known for publishing many of Samuel Johnson's works, financed and published this periodical, which ran for three volumes between 1746 and 1747.With volume I containing each issue from Number I, Saturday, March 29th 1746 to Number XIII, Saturday, September 13th 1746.With volume II containing Number XIV, Saturday September 27th 1746 to Number XXVI, Saturday March 28th 1747.The third volume, not present here, continued the work to the final issue, number XXXIX, Saturday, September 12th 1947.With a vignette title page to each volume, depicting Orpheus being approached by his muse.Featuring commentary on contemporary politics, current publications and examples of of poetry. ESTC reference number P1969A smart copy of the first two volumes of this mid eighteenth century periodical. In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strips, with small losses to back strip heads. Front and rear joint of volume II, and head of front and rear joint of volume I starting, with boards holding firm.
