Author's presentation copy to a Mr Davidson Esq with a later owner's (Mr Frederick Houghton) neat ex-libris to paste-down. Jabez Allies (1787 – 1856) was an English folklorist and antiquarian. Born at Lulsley, Worcestershire, where his family had resided for generations. He was one of the earliest writers on folklore. In early youth he was deeply impressed by the lingering relics of Roman and Saxon days and by the pastoral life that characterised his native place and later in life and threw light upon vestiges of Roman occupation in his native county.
