Tan calf spine and corners over marbled boards. Edges rubbed and bumped. Spine with5 raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and original dark geen leather title label: "Robinson Crusoe. - E. Griset.". Marbled page edges and matching endpapers. Engraved frontis. ("Crusoe & Friday on expedition") and title page vignette, with 23 engraved plates and approximately 80 smaller illustrations throughout the text, most signed by Griset. "Ornamental head-pieces and initial-letters are exact facsimiles of those used in the First Edition" - see note facing page [1]. Introduction dated (page xvi): "1869." Inscription to front endpaper: " 'Palmam qui meruit ferat' Arnold F. Bile from Alfred Hyd Harrison, The Lodge, Dunchurch, July 24 1877". A well preserved copy with excellent illustrations. ** Alfred Hyde Harrison M.A.Oxon ( 1839 - 1924) . in 1868 the Estate acquired by Alfred Hyde Harrison who converted the house to a preparatory school for the sons of gentlemen. Located at what is now Dunchurch Park Hotel (then, confusingly, known as Dunchurch Lodge).
