SCHILLING, Diebold. - Luzerner Bilderchronik 1513. Zur VI. Jahrhundertfeier des Eintrittes Luzerns in den Bund der Eidgenossen. Ed. for the commune of Lucerne by Robert Durrer and Paul Hilber.

1932 With 405 illus. on plates, sometimes printed recto and verso (40 in color and some double-page), and 1 heraldic vignette. 4 leaves, 289 pp., 1 leaf index. Folio. Orig. vellum with the coats of arms of the 13 cantons on both covers, spine gilt. Geneva, Sadag, 1932. Numbered copy of the de luxe edition bound in full vellum, of a total edition of 1000 copies. One of the most beautifully produced chronicles in facsimile. It was written by Diebold Schilling the Younger (1460-1522?) around 1513, and it offers a detailed account of daily life in the 15th century, treating such diverse topics as trade, fortification, topography, dress rules, etc. The technique of the illustrations is unique for the time: painted in opaque colors, with bold outlines in black ink, it is meant to convey the impression of paintings rather than colored pen drawings. The Lucerne Chronicle is considered the most beautiful of all illuminated chronicles ever made in the Swiss Confederation. - Wyss 141-143; Feller/Bonjour 66f.; Zemp, Schweizer. Bilderchroniken (1897), p. 99f.; Bodmer, Chroniken und Chronisten im Spätmittelalter (1976), p. 50f. CHRONICLES / CHRONIKEN ; HELVETICA: LUZERN-UNTERWALDEN ; VARIA ; FACSIMILES ;
