Trembley, Abraham - [Portrait by J. F. Clemens].

Geneva, [1778-]1783. Single sheet (19.3 x 12.0 cm). Printed surface 18.5 x 10.4 cm. = A nice, oval engraved portrait, "en profil", by the Danish engraver Johan Frederik Clemens (1748-1831) after an original drawing. Trembley (1710-1784) was a famous Swiss Zoologist, best known for his "Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire d'un genre de polypes d'eau douce" (1744), which contains the results of the first experimental biological study of regeneration in animals (polypes). The French caption records Trembley's year and city of birth (Geneve, 1710). This portrait was taken from a copy of Trembley's "Instructions d'un père à ses enfans, sur la principe de la vertu et du bonheur" (1783). Right margin a bit uneven and soiled, otherwise very good.
