Mumford, B. M.; et al - Ship's Insurance Document for the Brig Eliza, Sailing with Cargo from Curracoa to New York

New York, By the author, 1804. Printed document, partially filled in manuscript; 16 1/2 x 10 1/4 unfolded; pp. [4], text to pp. 1 only; closed horizontal cut along fold line, almost splitting the paper in half, else minor wear; in good condition. An interesting piece of maritime history, the policy covered Brig Eliza, with Master of the voyage Jones, sailing with cargo from Curracoa to New York. At the time, ships' insurance was a huge business, when both unexpected storms and French and British privateers could wipe a merchant's entire livelihood. The insurance broker - B. M. Mumford - had his offices at the Tontine Coffee House - the historical landmark, considered an epitome of the history of finance. The coffee shop, founded in 1793 in Manhattan at 68 Wall Street, was where the New York Stock Exchange was located (after the Buttonwood Agreement of 1792). Docking ships registered their cargo there and newly-arrived slaves were traded at the Tontine. Good .
