Cole, Kate E. - Oil-on-Celluloid Botanical Illustrations

S. l. (Oakland, CA), By the artist, 1890. Thirty illustrations, n. d. (ca 1890); loose sheets, sizes vary slightly - approx. 10 x 8; many of them identified in manuscript, some with short notes, to both recto and verso; most of them signed; overall minor wear - occasional mild spots, a few of the celluloid sheets slightly rippled - in very good to near fine condition. A stunning collection of wildflower botanical drawings by a noted California illustrator and artist Kate E. Cole (1856 - 1932), many of them represented rare examples of the flora of the Golden State. Though little is known about Cole's early life, by the 1880s and early-1890s she would be well-known for meticulously identifying and painting the wild flowers of Northern California. Her work would be exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association in 1887, the California State Building at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, etc. Her drawings are also part of the collection of the Oakland Museum of California. Near fine .
