The colophon reads: "July 4, 1862 was printed by The Kingdom by the Sea Press on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's expedition up the river Thames in an edition of 52 numbered copies. This is number [handwritten]". ¶ The text is an excerpt of the diary of Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), describing his boat trip with Alice Liddell and her sisters that was to provide the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland. The duplication of the author's name on the title page is explained in the motto by Vladimir Nabokov: "I always call him Lewis Carroll Carroll, because he was the first Humbert Humbert."
