. Small 8vo. Pp. (x), 68. Modern half vellum on marbled paper boards, title label on upper cover. Rare first edition. Contains the first printed ethnographic description of the land of the Kalmycks. Schnitzker, a Swedish-born captain in the Russian army, accompanied a Chinese embassy to Kalmyk Aiuk Khan in 1714. His extensive account of the Kalmyks contains information about the life, customs and beliefs of the people, as well as on the Russo-Kalmyk and Russo-Chinese relations at the time. Includes notes by Johan Gustaf Renat, an officer who lived in the area for 17 years. Printed by Lars Salvius and with a preface by him.
