TOOLEY STREET FIRE - Front View of the Fire of 1861.

1861. Large hand coloured engraving, 370 x 500 mm. old creases, laid down. The Tooley Street fire destroyed property to the value of 3 million pounds according to the letterpress, later estimated at £2 million, equivalent to around £235 million today. James Braidwood, the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade was killed by a falling wall while handing out their brandy rations to his men> a statue to his memory was erected in Edinburgh, the city of his birth.
