Rochegrosse, Georges-Antoine - [Poster] Gismonda. "Drama Lyrique En Quatre Actes D'Après Victorien Sardou. Poème de Henri Cain Et Louis Payen. Musique de Henry Février.![]() Paris, Imp. Maquet, 1919. First edition. Color lithograph canvas backed. 36 x 27 inches. Poster signed in stone by Rochegrosse for the 1919 production of Gismonda. The text was by Henri Cain and Louis Payen, based on the work by Victorien Sardou. Though completed in 1914, the production was delayed until after the First World War. First performed in Chicago on January 14, 1919, followed by a New York appearance, the French production, with Fanny Held in the lead role, for which this poster was created, premiered on October 15, 1919, at the Opera-Comique. Georges Antoine Rochegrosse (1859-1938) was a painter, illustrator, decorative artist, set painter, and poster designer: "A sincere lover of antiquity and its artistic resurrection in the Neo-Greek movement" (The Legacy of Homer: Four Centuries of Art from the Ecole Nationale, p. 293). His themes are generally historical, and he treated them on a colossal scale and in an emotional naturalistic style, with a distinct reveling in horrible subjects and details as seen here with Gismonda preparing to attack Zacaria with the ax he had planned to use on her lover Almerio.
